do i use polyurethane or another finish?

im painting some wooden coasters that have cork on the center of the top side ((where the drink sits)). im just using cheap acrylic craft paint, but i wanted to finish it with something. not sure if polyurethanes the way to go, or something else? i read you have to sand the wood after applying the first coat of poly, so what would i do about the portion that is cork? experienced advice is greatly appreciated!

1. its ok to use the poly take some steel wool and go over the wood lightly in between coats put three coats on
2. use a marine varnish water proof and nice glossy finish and yes finely sand after each layer ) not the last layer
