SAND Fish Tank Bottom?
Hi there, I am very interested in introducing sand to my 2.5 gallon fish tank (that holds Freedom my Red, White & Blue Betta *Clever I know =o) I need to know if it is alright to use ANY sand as long as it doesn't contain silicone. In a few minutes here i plan on visiting local pool stores, michaels craft store and lowes to see if they have anything. I need some advice on what to buy. I currently have no rooted plants. Thank you in advance = ) Denielle

- sand would be great and natural!!! add a few root plants to make it more natural! good luk
- You could get play sand, a lot of people use that in there tank. I usually go to my lfs for sand or I order Tahitian moon sand (all black and makes fish colors stand out.)
- i wouldn't do sand in such a small aquarium, if you have a filter it might get to the impeller and ruin it, besides that is harder to clean and more ovbious when is dirty, natural colour fine gravel would look nice?
- if you go to your LFS you can but a small bag of live sand or regular colored sand the regular sand runs around 4.99 a bag the live sand maybe 8.99 a bag but you will not need to use it all so you will be better off with the regular sand. Yes you can use sand, I prefer it to gravel.
- Best sand on a budget - Pool Filter Sand. If you get sand from the pet store, make sure it isn't LIVE SAND. That is for saltwater tanks, and it has live microorganisms living in it. Hence the name.
- I use play sand in my tanks and it works very nicely. Also pool filter sand I heard works well also, both of those are fairly inexpensive and are good choices for bigger tanks. Since your tank is so small, you won't need that much sand (5 pounds should be plenty), so any of the sands would work well for you also such as the Tahitian Moon sand and the other sands that you'd find in your LFS. Below are a couple links to some sands that may work well for you, one being the Tahitian Moon sand which may be nice and bring out the colors in your fish. When getting any sand for your tank, make sure to rinse it very well before adding it. To rinse, just put it in a bucket and fill with water, pour out the water and repeat till the water you are pouring out is crystal clear.
