What is the best mix of concrete for use in molds?

I am making stepping stones. The mix that you can buy in craft stores is too expensive for the number of stepping stones I want to make. The box from the craft store says that it includes portland cement and silica sand. Does anybody know what else the mold mix might have in it and the proportions? I tried Quik krete and the like and it just cracked when taking it out. I am now using a sand mix which cracks less often, but the craft store mix worked best. I would like to mix my own, though to save money.
