What are some neat crafts with sand?

I'd really like to make somekind of sand art with colored sand.

  1. Pouring the colored sand into the bottle to make it layered. Or you could make a mini sand castle with the sand mixed with glue!

  3. We used to make something called "sand candles." You could use colored sand for them, if you have a goodly amount. Dampen the sand and put it into a heat-resistant container -- a saucepan works great if your mom doesn't mind -- in pretty layers. Dig a hole in the sand and make three "leg holes" evenly spaced around the edge. Use three because three points form a plane and your candle won't be wobbly. Melt a light-colored or white wax. Carefully pour it into the "mold" created by the hole you dug in the sand. Wrap a length of candle wick (from the crafts store or from the old candles you chopped and melted to get the wax to pour into your mold) around a pencil or other small stick. Make two small extra piles of sand, one on each side of your candle-to-be, and lay the pencil or stick across the candle and rest it on these two piles. When the wax has hardened, remove your candle. Some sand will cling to it. If it's not enough, glue on some more when the wax has fully hardened.
